After our first week of homework we have decided to make a few changes. The composition notebook will come home on Mondays with a writing prompt. Please have your child work on it all week and return it on Friday. The math homework will follow our third grade calendar. Spelling/Word Work will start coming home on Tuesday. Please look for instructions in your child’s homework folder.
We have had a great first week with your students. One of the activities that we did with the students was posted on the Spanish Oaks website: http://spanishoaks.nebo.edu/news/third-grade-pirates-spanish-oaks.
This week we will begin homework. Your child’s notebook/folder should come to school every morning and will be sent home every night. We have listed the homework assignments on the third grade calendar. C.N. stand for composition notebooks. Each day the students will have a writing/phonics/misc activity to do. Some days they will have a math sheet to do as well (the assignment numbers are listed). We will start spelling/word work practice next week. Please let us know if you have any questions.
The date has changed for our field trip to the Red Barn. It is now scheduled on Tuesday, September 30th. We will be arriving at the Red Barn at 10:15. Parents are invited to come, but their cost will be $3.00 and they may need to provide their own transportation.
Welcome to a new school year at Spanish Oaks Elementary. We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year. Educating children takes the the work of student, parent, and teacher to ensure success. Here is a brief outline of the third grade curriculum to give you an idea of the concepts we will be studying this year.
Reading: We will be learning new vocabulary and developing reading skills– including phonetics and building oral fluency. Students will develop an appreciation of literature by reading stories and short novels. The students should always have an extra book or two in their desk for silent reading times and they are required to read at home a minimum of 20 minutes each school day to meet their reading goals. They need to record the amount of time read on the reading sheet sent home each month. They will need to have a parent sign the sheet to participate in our reading activities.
Language Art: We will focus on grammar, spelling, writing, and publishing, research, and oral communication skills. Pre-writing, drafting, revising and editing will be stressed this year. We hope to publish many individual stories, poems, and reports this year. This year for our end of year testing our third graders will be expected to type their responses so please have them practice their typing at home.
Math: Multiplication is the critical concept to comprehend in third grade. We will study and practice our multiplication times tables extensively and our goal is to achieve 100% memorization. Please practice multiplication with your child this year. Your child will appreciate it not only for third grade, but also for the rest of his/her life. We will also be studying addition, subtraction, division, problem solving, an introduction to fractions and geometry, plus much more. Nebo School District is implementing a new math program this year. We will be going over parent resources associated with the program at our back to school night.
Social Studies: In Social Studies the students will investigate how environments and communities change over time through the influence of people. Each student will learn about the early indigenous people of the Americas and analyze how these cultures changed with the arrival of people from Europe. Third graders will explore how Native Americans maintain their culture today. Expanded geography and map skills will assist students in their study of world connections. Using social studies, character, and life skills, students will examine communities and gain a better understanding of government, economics, timelines, and citizenship. Students will learn to reuse, reduce, and recycle.
Science: In science we will explore the relationship between the earth, moon, and sun. We will determine the differences between living and nonliving organisms. The students will learn what happens when force is applied to objects and all about our earth’s gravity.
Your student will also be instructed and expected to participate in Art, Music, P.E. and Computers. The teachers will help build social skills and provide a positive experience for your child in our classroom. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us. Once again, we look forward to the new year.
